Spelltown is NE’s new concert series, a gathering for experimentation and improvisation. In this series we aim at stimulating the invited artists to explore new musical expressions and/or form new collaborations. Each event closes with an improvisation set where artists and (some of) the NE members meet altogether on stage.
The first edition of Spelltown is taking place at GROND, a newly established collective and performance venue in Amsterdam Oost. For this evening, in collaboration with several GROND members, we invited newer and older friends. The participating artists are Dominique Chabot, Mehrnaz Khorrami, and Jasna Veličković. On stage with them the NEs Dan Gibson, Anne Wellmer, and Semay Wu.
About the artists
Dominique Chabot is a versatile double bass player, based in Amsterdam, active in classical, contemporary and improvised music. She performs regularly with ensembles and orchestras in the Netherlands and abroad. The projects she enjoys most are the ones that collaborate with other disciplines.Alongside music, Dominique is a self-taught photographer and videomaker and she is exploring making her own inter-disciplinary work. She is committed to contributing to a solution for global issues and educating values, such as equality and social justice, and she uses this as a guideline in her work as an artist, as well in her daily life.During her studies in Germany, Dominique organised concerts in local refugee camps, with fellow students. She also set up several projects in Palestine, to share music while also working to bring awareness to the political situation.Dominique holds a Bachelor and a Masters degree in Professional Performance from Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. She was a member of the International Ensemble Modern Academy 2018-2019 in Frankfurt.Dominique is a member of the European Cultural Parliament – Future Generation.
Jasna Veličković (RS/NL) is the Belgrade-born Dutch composer and performer based in Amsterdam. Her artistic output has been developed through an interaction between a life-long fascination with the sound, an enduring interest in an intricate encounter between music and technology, and an inclination toward experimentation. Since 2008 she has been exploring the musical capacities of the (electro) magnetic field – induction, interference – both as the source of sound and the compositional material. This preoccupation of hers became an ongoing research artistic project that she dubbed The Art of Coil.
Mehrnaz Khorrami is an electro-acoustic composer and violin player based in The Hague, the Netherlands. She studied Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and has a background in classical music. Mehrnaz’s artistic practice is centered in designing sound installations, audiovisual performances, and live electro-acoustic improvisation. Her compositions integrate diverse sounds, including custom-made acoustic instruments, urban spaces, and synthesized sound generated and manipulated through creative coding.
